Reflexology is a focused pressure technique, usually applied to the feet. Did you know that there are areas and points on the feet that correspond to every part, gland, and organ in the body? Applying pressure to these points can stimulate a healing response in the body.
One of the most obvious benefits of reflexology is relaxation and stress relief. In our busy lives, it's difficult to make relaxation a priority. There's always something to do, something that keeps us moving and active. Taking the time to be still and allow ourselves to relax can be beneficial to our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. This is especially important when someone is trying to conceive, or is nurturing a pregnancy or a newborn baby!
Reflexology combines the body's own energy and the healing effects of touch therapy to promote a healing response. This healing occurs when the body is in a deep state of relaxation, and the parasympathetic nervous system is engaged. This system is sometimes called "rest and digest", or "rest and heal".
Stress is believed to be responsible for the majority of illnesses. We spend a lot of our time in the "fight or flight" response of our nervous system, known as the sympathetic nervous system. By engaging the "rest and heal" response, the stress response is interrupted, and health is promoted instead of disease.
During a reflexology session, your body's metabolism normalizes, circulation improves, lymph is moved, and the deep state of relaxation allows your body to heal whatever needs healing. You may find that you sleep better after a reflexology session.
The beneficial effects of the physiological changes induced by the session are most noticeable within the first 24 hours, and they can continue to have an effect for five days!
